Sonya Abbye-Taylor
I have worked for many years in the field of education, serving as a special education teacher, a school district administrator, a college professor, and a college administrator. I’ve worked with students of all ages and abilities, from preschool to high school, college students, and undergraduates and graduate students. I worked as an independent consultant developing educational programs for corporations to enable employees to advance in their careers and for school districts seeking to improve student achievement.
I completed my doctorate in December of 2013 after putting that goal on hold for many years as life intervened.
I am the counselor for the Education Honor Society on campus; we provide professional development for teacher candidates and present our work at conferences.
I have conducted Poverty Simulations for several years at the college and local schools to help educators understand the impact of poverty and trauma on learning.

A personal glimpse
I have lived in Patterson for 22 years and have been a resident of Putnam County for 38. I live in a partially renovated barn built in the 1850’s that my husband and I continue to define. I have a son, a Carmel High School graduate who has been working for a Non-Governmental agency (NGO) in Kyiv, Ukraine since March training their aid workers. I have two large, mud-loving dogs. I have amazing friends and colleagues. I have a job I love and new research interests. I never cease to be amazed by and grateful for these gifts.
I am a serious recycler and composter.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into I walk for exercise as often as I can, admiring the beauty of Patterson. I am grateful for the new trailhead on Route 311.
I enjoy reading and always have a book tape to enjoy when driving.
You may see me at ACME, Tractor Supply, Patterson Library, Kohl’s, LUV Your Hair (the owner lives in Patterson.) Please stop and chat.
